Rania Khalek Dispatches from the Underclass

A multi-state manhunt is currently underway after 33-year-old Christopher Dorner, a former LAPD officer, went on a shooting rampage killing at least three people so far.

Terrorism is never okay. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore its root causes. Christopher Dorner is a terrorist for targeting innocent people regardless of what they allegedly did to him. But what cannot be denied is the fact that Dorner may indeed be correct in his evaluation of the LAPD.

Below is Christopher Dorner’s manifesto, published by KTLA (they redacted the names of individuals mentioned to protect their privacy). Dorner is a former LAPD officer who was fired in 2009 for making false statements about his training officer. He says he wasn’t lying and has gone on a shooting rampage, targeting those he says wronged him and their families.  Read More

Just as I published a blog post about LAPD brutality, I find out this insanity is happening right now.

Last month I wrote about two Los Angeles police officers who are under investigation for using the threat of jail to force women to have sex with them. A man of Native American descent unleashed some much-needed truth on a group of anti-immigrant protesters in Tuscon, Arizona. And lucky for us, it was caught on video and uploaded to Youtube.

My favorite part is when he says to a protester holding an anti-immigrant sign, “Yeah, we should’ve put that sign up when you sons of bitches came.” I only wish every xenophobic  hate-fest was subject to this type of counter protest.

An analysis conducted at MIT found that black and Hispanic voters waited almost twice as long to vote in the 2012 election as their white counterparts. The following graph, created by the New York Times, shows that they waited for an average of 20.2 minutes whereas white voters waited an estimated 12.7 minutes.

But that’s only the nationwide average. Another analysis cited by the Times finds that waiting times varied from state to state with Florida coming in first with lines averaging 45 minutes long. Next was DC, Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia. Read More

Michael Isikoff of NBC News got his hands on a Justice Department white paper that contains the Obama administration’s legal framework for extrajudicial killings of US citizens abroad. The 16-page white paper expands on the rationale put forward by Attorney General Eric Holder last year in a speech at Northwestern University. If you thought that argument was disturbingly unconstitutional, then this one is going to make your blood boil.

According to the paper, the US government can kill you without due process if an “informed, high-level official of the US government” concludes that you “pose an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States.” At first sight this may sound like a limit on extrajudicial killings, but don’t be fooled because the government has redefined the meaning of “imminence”: Read More

There are some excellent articles I’ve come across this weekend about police misconduct. I haven’t had time to post about each individually so I’ve highlighted what I believe are must-read stories.  Read More

While the militarization of domestic law enforcement is nothing new, there’s always surprises to be found in the increasingly combat-ready arsenals of local police departments.
