The right-wing New York Post has beat the New York Times and other local outlets in reporting on the Brooklyn protest currently happening against the police killing of Kimani Gray. Judging by the Post’s report, it sounds the apocalypse is unfolding in Brooklyn.

Keep in mind the Post is very pro-police and loves the NYPD along with stop and frisk, so their report should be read with a grain of salt. I took the liberty of bolding buzzwords that elicit images stereotypical images of unprovoked black and brown savagry as a reminder that this is how protests against police violence in communities of color are often framed:

A riot broke out in East Flatbush tonight after a vigil for 16 year-old Kimani Grey, who was shot by cops when he pointed a gun at officers earlier this week, police said.

The disorderly group threw bottles and other objects at police officers and vehicles parked along Church Avenue, cops said. They also looted businesses including a Rite Aide.

“They poured in here like 40 or 50 of them. They pulled the registers off the counters, they flipped over everything. They punched me in the face. Several of them did, not just one [person.] It was insane,” said the store’s manager, Lorenzo Evans.

At least three other people were bleeding from the face after being assaulted in the store, the sources said.

The crowd went wild on the blocks surrounding the 67 precinct station house near Church Avenue and East 55 Street, cops and witnesses said.

Cops had one man in custody for disorderly conduct and there were no reports of injured officers — though the situation was still chaotic, witnesses said.

I wish the Post would get this worked up over routine police killings of young black residents like Ramarley Graham, Shantel Davis and now Kimani Gray.

UPDATE:

CBS has published a very different report of the same event the Post covered. A Rite Aid employee was indeed assaulted and rocks and bottles were thrown at the police station, but the chaos appears to have been isolated to the actions of a few angry residents. I’m not endorsing the assault of innocent cashiers but can anyone really blame this community for expressing outrage?

Police told CBS that the march was initially peaceful until the crowd dispersed (emphasis mine):

Some people screamed, and rocks and bottles were thrown, over the police-involved shooting Saturday of 16-year-old Kimani Gray.

Rocks were thrown at the windows of the police station, while garbage and bottles were thrown in officers’ direction, police said.

During the march, crowd members rushed into a Rite Aid at Albany and Church avenues around 9:20 p.m., and assaulted a worker inside the store, police said. The worker was taken to a nearby hospital with a head injury, and is expected to recover, police said.

Once the crowd arrived at the scene of the shooting, emotions remained tense, 1010 WINS reported. However, City Councilman Jumaane Williams (D-45th) and Gray’s sister appealed for calm, and the crowd complied.

Some group members laid flowers at the scene, and eventually everyone went their separate ways.

WCBS 880 reported that by 9:50 p.m., the situation had calmed down. There were no reports of arrests or injuries. Police told WCBS 880 the melee was a “disorderly gathering of people” rather than a riot.
