It’s raining Israeli bombs in Gaza yet again and as the death toll mounts some people are having themselves a laugh at the expense of the dead. I’m talking about #HamasBumperStickers, a twitter hashtag that caught on like wildfire yesterday mostly among people who despise Palestinians (and Arabs in general) and think it’s funny when Israel kills them. While I’m not usually one to amplify the trolling rhetoric of heartless bigots, I feel it’s important that these particular individuals be shamed and ostracized for their sick jokes, especially since the hashtag they are using has apparently been trending worldwide. Here are just a few:
#HamasBumperStickers "Ask Me About My Exploding Grandchildren"

This one has been retweeted the most, with 1298 retweets as of this post:

Okay, so you might be thinking, “Come on, Rania, these are insignificant creeps on the internet with too much time on their hands.” Actually, Israeli defense officials have been participating as well, like this IDF spokesperson:
#HamasBumperStickers I fired ten rockets and all I got was this lousy bumper sticker
— Barak Raz (@BarakRaz82) November 15, 2012
@CaptainBarakRaz’s colleague, also an IDF spokesperson, was so amused by his tweet that he retweeted it, adding an LOL to show his chuckling approval:
LOL RT @CaptainBarakRaz: #HamasBumperStickers I fired ten rockets and all I got was this lousy bumper sticker
— Peter Lerner (@LTCPeterLerner) November 15, 2012
That same IDF official even came up with his own joke:
Official IDF spokesperson RT @MajPeterLerner: #HamasBumperStickers oops did I say "Gates of hell"? I took the wrong turn at the lights.
— Joseph Dana (@ibnezra) November 15, 2012
And another:
#HamasBumperStickers My car is a stairway to heaven, with a little help from #Israel #IsraelUnderFire
— Peter Lerner (@LTCPeterLerner) November 15, 2012
People who took offense tried to counter the insanity by using the hashtag to tweet important though often ignored facts about Hamas and Gaza:
#HamasBumperStickers We won a democratic election that was endorsed by the Bush administration.
— Charles Davis (@charliearchy) November 15, 2012
But it didn’t catch on. Neither did the hashtag #IDFBumperStickers, which some used to criticize Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. #HamasBumperStickers remains as strong as ever, with right-wing Arab hater Michelle Malkin joining in the fun every so often while criticizing those who dare to be offended by jokes that dehumanize dead Palestinians.
As for the person(s) who started the hashtag, The People’s Cube—described by Wikipedia as “a U.S. based satirical conservative website”—proudly took full responsibility in a blog post that detailed the success of their bigotry:
Last night on Twitter, at 10pm, @ThePeoplesCube started a #HamasBumperStickers trend, which was picked up by tens of thousands people and quickly rose to the #2 trend not just in the United States but also worldwide – the fact promptly picked up by Michelle Malkin’s Twitchy Team.
Meanwhile, the residents of Gaza continue to endure endless airstrikes on top of a nearly 6 year long illegal blockade that has left over 1.5 million people cutoff from a world that has abandoned them. Only a sociopath would find that funny.
Just to give you an idea of what they’re laughing at, here are photos of children that Israel has killed or wounded in the last two days:
Omar Misharawi, 11-months-old

This picture of 11-month-old Omar Masharawi was published by the Washington Post. Omar was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza yesterday.
Omar’s father, Jihad Masharawi, is a BBC Arabic journalist in Gaza. This picture of Jihad sobbing while holding his dead has become the face of this offensive to many arabs around the world:
As the assault on Gaza continues, the pictures of dead and wounded children are piling up.

While the children of Gaza bear the brunt of the bloodshed, Israeli children aren’t safe either.

Yesterday, Ahram English posted the following video showing an emotional Palestinian official holding the charred body of baby killed in Gaza by an Israeli airstrike. (Warning: It’s very graphic!)

Jews have to be the least funny ethnic group on the planet.
November 15, 2012 at 5:22 pmMel Brooks, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David…forgot the last 40+ years of pop culture?
November 20, 2012 at 12:35 pmYeah dude, I totally second Jason’s reply. Please don’t generalize about an entire ethnic group. That’s exactly why I was railing about the #HamasBumperStickers folks, most of which happened to be super conservative Americans. In fact, there’s no indication that the people participating were even Jewish.
November 20, 2012 at 12:54 pmIt’s very clear that those using the hashtag are condemning the entire population of Gaza. This is how far too many Americans think of the Arab world- as terrorists, blighted by birth, unworthy of empathy even as children.
November 15, 2012 at 5:29 pmGreat point, Bentley. That’s what makes this, and other bombing campaigns by countries like Israel and the U.S., so scary. When a population is dehumanized to the level that Arabs/Muslims have been, massacring innocent families, whether by mistake or not, becomes totally acceptable.
November 20, 2012 at 12:55 pmInfuriating and sickening.
November 15, 2012 at 5:50 pmAstonished. I still remember when 9/11 Americans ask the world “Why Do They Hate Us?”

November 15, 2012 at 7:11 pmThe U.S. should nuke the Ay-rabs and the Joos then take the oil. Kill them all and let God/Allah/Eloh/Rama, or whatever name you call the creator of the universe, sort them out!
November 15, 2012 at 7:54 pmThank you for showing both sides, Rania. You are a rare and wonderful individual in this world of sick sadists.
November 15, 2012 at 8:01 pmI think you ll find most of the comments are addressing hamas, suicide bombers and bleeding heart liberals who are remarkably silent on arab atrocities
November 15, 2012 at 9:04 pmHamas has long been condemned as a terrorist organization by the USA, Canada, European Union, etc. Defending them just makes you look like a cunt, lady.
November 15, 2012 at 9:11 pmIsrael is Goliath to Gaza’s David. While American made drones are pounding Gaza, the narrative stays the same that Israel is acting in self-defense. Let’s see…Israel is a thermonuclear nation defending itself against a population that has to bring their supplies in through tunnels from Egypt and are not allowed to receive humanitarian aid or export goods to build their economy? In what world is this argument even feasible from “respected” thinkers?
November 15, 2012 at 10:28 pmWe have the bomb too–do you really think the US would stand idly by if its citizens were targeted by known terrorists?
November 20, 2012 at 12:41 pmThe only way to stop the state of perpetual manufactured war is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-ReWpcNpb4&feature=g-user-u
November 15, 2012 at 11:21 pmI wonder what the Palestinian people have contributed to society in the past 60 years? well the Jews have won over 160 noble prizes in science, medicine, economy and social matters while the Palestinian people have “won” 2 noble prizes for peace which is not really effective any-more really.
The Jewish people have been adding value to human kind while the Palestinian have only really been doing is trying to destroy Israel and brainwashing their children to hate and kill.
November 16, 2012 at 12:28 am“No peace, no recognition, no negotiation.” Ugh, sad stories, tiny hearts.
November 20, 2012 at 12:33 pmYou sound like a typical butthurt liberal Islamophile. Go eat shit.
November 21, 2012 at 9:06 pmTHANK YOU FOR POSTING the bumper sticker I have used a couple from here on CafePress.
Even though you think they are wrong – they are accurate when dealing with hamas and gaza citizens supporting them. My bumper sticker goes back to the 60’s a slight change nuke em all let allah sort them out
