UPDATE: The reporter who asked the question is Amina Ismail, a journalist at McClatchy. I urge you to thank her for asking it (her twitter handle is @AminaIsmail) because I can’t imagine it was easy given how extremely rare and frowned upon it is to challenge the dominant “war on terror” narrative, especially as a female reporter with an Arab-sounding name. And Amina, if you’re reading this, thanks for kicking ass!

Matthew Keys, the social media editor at Reuters, posted audio of a reporter asking White House Press Secretary Jay Carney if U.S. bombings that kill innocent civilians in Afghanistan constitute an “act of terror” given the labeling of the Boston Marathon bombing as “terrorism”. She specifically refers to a U.S. airstrike earlier this month that killed 11 children, just the latest in a seemingly endless line of Afghan civilian deaths at the hands of the U.S. government.
[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/88296126″ params=”” width=” 100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
Carney completely dodged the questions, pointing instead to the 9/11 terrorist attacks to justify U.S. bombings in Afghanistan. After a long-winded answer excusing U.S. conduct, Carney concludes, ” we take great care in the prosecution of this war.”
Tell me, does this look like “great care” to you?

The lifeless bodies of Afghan children lay on the ground before their funeral ceremony, after a NATO airstrike killed several Afghan civilians, including ten children during a fierce gun battle with Taliban militants in Shultan, Shigal district, Kunar, eastern Afghanistan, Sunday, April 7, 2013. (AP Photo/Naimatullah Karyab)
I transcribed the exchange in full:
REPORTER: I send my deepest condolence to the victims and families in Boston. But President Obama said that what happened in Boston was an act of terrorism. I would like to ask, Do you consider the U.S. bombing on civilians in Afghanistan earlier this month that left 11 children and a woman killed a form of terrorism? Why or why not?
JAY CARNEY: Well, I would have to know more about the incident and then obviously the Department of Defense would have answers to your questions on this matter. We have more than 60,000 U.S. troops involved in a war in Afghanistan, a war that began when the United States was attacked, in an attack that was organized on the soil of Afghanistan by al Qaeda, by Osama bin laden and others and more than 3,000 people were killed in that attack. And it has been the President’s objective once he took office to make clear what our goals are in Afghanistan and that is to disrupt, dismantle and ultimately defeat al Qaeda. And with that as our objective to provide enough assistance to Afghan National Security Forces and the Afghan government to allow them to take over security for themselves. And that process is underway and the United States has withdrawn a substantial number of troops and we are in the process of drowning down further as we hand over security lead to Afghan forces. And it is certainly the case that I refer you to the defense department for details that we take great care in the prosecution of this war and we are very mindful of what our objectives are.
At the very least, this serves as another example of the utter meaninglessness of the word “terrorism”.
You simply do not understand! Those creatures, those ‘others’, they do not care for their children, in a day or two they will for get that they ever had them. And anyway, these creatures are so primitive, live in such squalor that they would die at an early age, anyway.
Only ‘we’ Americans care for our children, suffer lasting hurt, we are the exceptional people — alongside the Jews, that is.
If you believe your own statement then you are clinically insane.
no,he’s just an american .
it is known as sarcasm
no, that comment is made to make Americans look bad. it’s just too obviously stupid, so it has to come from a leftist.
Its Sarcasm from what I see
Relax…he was just being sarcastic…you’re not the sharpest tool in the box, are you?
Peter is obviously joking.
Hi peter hindrup
If You look back to your ancestors, u will find that they fleed famine and persecutions. They settled in america known as the dream land after they took sorry they stole it from indians, the original inhabitants. When they got melted with other caucasians, blacks, asians, they called the land USA and their language english. You could have called yourself half-breed with no origin and background, a fucking pest
you people couldn’t get his point, it’s called sarcasm stupids.
what the fuck is wrong with you
sarcasm?
*rolls eyes* shut up, you’re embarrassing humanity.
Humanity was already embarrassed.
Wow you’re the reason everyone hates America.
I don’t think its funny to joke about these matters.
the only people who hate america are young freaks misinformed by hard left professors, and people who hate freedom and are jealous and too stupid to realize it.
nobody, i repeat nobody is jealous of america…
This is clearly sarcastic satire, you people need better reading comprehension.
Maybe, but that isn’t a perspective foreign to everyone in America either, but rather a dogmatic one. Dogma isn’t an anomaly in America anymore than in Israel or any other Muslim theocracy. The fact of the matter is it’s the foundation of Dominionism and every creator god religion which views its particular followers as “chosen” and all others as inferior or less.
are there other types of satire?
What kind of sick-fuck jokes about the senseless killing of babies? Perhaps your privilege has grown into a perverted type of arrogance that tells you this type of behavior is ok. Check yourself, fool!
however the worst part is that he completely swerves the comment and tries his best not to answer it. clearly he has been told what to say..
Its obviously in bad taste… people are smart enough to see its sarcasm… that doesn’t mean its appropriate or acceptable.
Sadly, there are people who may actually feel this way. I agree with the comment above: {it doesn’t mean it’s appropriate or acceptable} – we shouldn’t apply sarcasm or humor to such a heartbreaking incident.
stop feeding the troll.
This person is clearly engaging satire in an effort to suggest the completely inhuman, ethnocentric and disgusting attitude of those in the ruling classes who have virtually zero regard for human life.
you arent human
You are either a typical “know it all teenager” (that really knows nothing), or a mentally insane person. People live differently in every part of the world, why?, because we all belong to different cultures which is a group of different traditions and lifestyles, none is better than the other. We are a very diverse world and you need to learn respect for others. You also make it clear that you have never left your town probably, maybe you should.
A wonderful piece of satire. A good use of double entendre, making interpretation easy for those who know how to read between the lines. People just cannot fathom the depths of depravity that war machines run by military madmen over the centuries have led us into, that have brought us into normalizing the murder of innocent by remote control. It is worse than depravity, it is worse than blasphemy, it is the evolution of a mindless, impersonal, unconscious, mechanistic, empty universe..
I like the debate this comment has inspired because it is the unconscious thoughts of the kind of elitist mindset that we need to be on the lookout for.
youre a sick whore. that is all.
The sick thing is – this is (i’m sure) what many americans subconciously think when they see stories like this. Only empathy for the western ‘civilised’ societies -_- disgraceful.
Usually when so-called “men” call anyone a “whore” it’s to let everyone else know that he has nothing left to argue and no leg to stand on, much less any confidence. “whore” is what you throw out as your last gasp after the other person has totally humiliated you into nothingness. You saying “whore” is read to the rest of us as “that guy didn’t just loose the argument, he was de-balled in the process”.
dude, first of all, america is acontinent, and not the property of the united states as they bunch of redneck weirdoes like to think, second, you are sick, take your pseudo democracy and “care” for others to another world cause in this the most violent creatures among humans come from united states, filled with psychos and perverts. you are not an example of rightiousness but an example of what humanity should never become
@peter I apologize on behalf of humanity for the dumbasses who replied to your post. Pretty sure most of them are americans who need a “sarcasm alert” poster banged over their heads
Dude, first of all, North America is a continent…
That’s a disgusting response. Shame on you.
Yeah, you care for them so much that’s why you abort millions of them every year
I am a Mother and Grandmother here in the U.S. and I am appalled, sickened, angered, saddened – those are no words harsh enough to describe what i feel – when I look at the photograph of these children who are victims of U.S. bombs. I love my grandchildren and I would kill to protect them, so I can imagine the grief, anger and pain of the relatives of these children, I know how they mourn and suffer. These are acts against humanity and the U.S. should be held accountable. I am glad that there are people courageous enough to ask the questions and bring to our attention what is happening in other parts of the world. Thank you to Amina Ismail for the courage to speak for the victims and ask the questions we all must ask. It is better that we all speak from the heart, so we cannot be misinterpreted. The photographs speak for themselves, will we listen?
Finally a sane reply
@Michele LeBeau. Please provide any and all links to your comments made when pictures of all the young children lying in the streets of the villages in Iraq as Hussein gassed them from the air and with artillery shells filled with the gas. I await your response.
I now people from Afghanistan they love their children more than anything and take very good care of them. Why would you say something like this it is horrible. Why are American children or people in general so much better American government has done horrible things and Americans are spoiled. I am American born and raised but I have spent time in other countries and i would give anything to be as greatfull as people from third world countries we have amazing food more than one of things we do not need. These people are victims of politics the american government is telling you to think these things have you own mind and stand for humanity.
You people just dont realize that he meant the opposite of what he said. JEEEEEZ…
Have you heard that “a poor man’s war is terrorism while a rich man’s terrorism is war”? http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/01/opinion/americas-use-of-drones-the-legality-issue.html?_r=0
You are correct, Sadam Hussein was very wealthy. He could not, however, afford a WMD. I guess that’s why he used the “gas” to kill the “others” in Iraq.
Idiot!
We the Jury, find the recipient of the reply, UTTERLY & TOTALLY, INSANE in regards to his comments regarding humans not caring about their offspring, and TOTALLY SUB-HUMAN, in regards to his comment about jews giving a shit about anybody but themselves!
either you’re being sarcastic – I HOPE!- or you truly one of the most despicable and disgusting creatures imaginable, and should seek a job in the federal govt.
Please, oh please add (sarcasm) to the end of these types of comments. Sarcasm should be familiar and understood to Americans, but it doesn’t translate well.
Come on guys peter is just being sarcastic, its so easy to tell.
are you for fucking real? You misogynistic piece of shit? Humans are humans you disgusting excuse for a human being. This statement has proved to everyone that the only primitive form of life here is you.
Your statement holds absolutely no ground. Your life, as far as I am concerned now holds absolutely no worth and somebody should relieve you of it.
To even begin this train of thinking, you have to be deeply disturbed, to then believe it, you are mentally ill.
It is concerning, but not surprising that there are people out there like you. However it just makes it all the more clear that while there are people out there like you, you racist scum sucking dirt bag, that personal values of this world will not change and America will only sink further into its own shitpile that it has created due to ignorance and close mindedness from people like you.
Fucking cunt, burn in hell.
I agree with you in principal, but some things that should be pointed out.
1. Sarcasm. Not that anyone else has pointed that out. Also note that there is a difference between using Sarcasm to “get a laugh” and to point out the incredible absurdity of an opponents worldview. This post does the latter.
2. Misogynistic? I think you use that word but do not know what it means. It only applies to hatred of women, not another race of people.
3. If you REALLY TRULY believe that someone’s life is worth nothing
because they don’t value other peoples lives… well…
You people are fucking dumb. Firstly: you don’t know what misogynistic means, secondly: This is sarcasm, its clearly fucking sarcasm, its been pointed out a number of times that this is sarcasm. Despite that, 100 fucking morons have filled up my notifications getting angry at a piece of satire.
Sounds like bull. True conservative Americans do care. This man or woman is just trying to create hype.
where hype is necessary. there has been too much hush hush on these matters
… @Peter Hindrup… Don’t you dare try to include True Americans or Israeli’s in your tainted ugly remarks … These children had families that Loved them, and will go on hurting without them … Just because they didn’t live on Knob Hill, such as you do, doesn’t make them any Less Valuable or Loved by their Families, or Our LORD and Heavenly Father.!!! … God Bless These Innocent Babies and Children … GOD have pity on you Peter, for being such an ass .!!!..

It appears sarcasm is a “foreign” concept to many and can not recognize it for its inherent worth.
Using the crutch of sarcasm is weak and pointless. This is why the world hates the United States. It’s government is corrupt and thinks everyone should bow to them. Most of it’s people are blind and dumb and believe everything their government tells them, and America’s children are egotistical and walk around with a entitlement dogma that makes them come off as spoiled and worthless to the rest of the world. I am a 37 year old American Male and the younger generation below me makes me ill to my stomach, and the older generation leading this country even makes me more ill…. The United States is setting itself up for disaster and collapse and we have noone to blame but ourselves because our leaders cannot lead and our children were raised by laws that prevented us from beating the ever loving fuck out of them to teach them right from wrong… R.I.P America.
You sound like a Stupid Zionist & you truly are a heartless arrogant filthy soul , Go to hell
I’m going to look at this as sarcasm and congratulate Peter for this demonstration. There is a duality when it comes to “caring” in this country. A lot of people, and politicians, could care less about what our government does around the world, but “don’t let it happen here, fix it!!” “More laws !!” And then you have the opposite side, where we should fix all the woes of the world and drive past our homeless, unemployed, under fed, and under educated in this country, on our way to send money to other countries. Our priorities in this country is skewed to say the least.
By your ridiculous statement, I can understand how much you do care for your children. American culture has no social or moral values. Children don’t care about parents. They just leave them for dead in old houses. You are a completely biased and racist person with, simply, no humanity left in you. People like you must suffer hell of a pain in this world and world here after. I feel pity for you. Get yourself a psychiatrist, before you end up killing your own children and parents.
What the hell you are talking –“exceptional jack ass”–probably because you are too evil –you dirty nature’s mistake doesn’t know that those people are more careful parents from the “exceptional pedofils” who are abusing and malesting their own children –YOU r the shame dirty virus that’s why have to be treat by exceptional method –you — psycho .
I consider myself to be a very sarcastic person, but people who use sarcasm need to acknowledge that sarcasm is not appropriate in every situation. Hundreds of thousands of people die in the Middle East due to acts of terrorism on both sides; they are caught in the middle and they have no way to escape. I do not think that this is something to joke about. Think about if middle-eastern people were joking about 9-11. While there is a place for sarcasm, it is not here.
I can`t believe that people don`t realize that you were being ironic.
With these comments, do not be surprise with acts like 9/11. Talk for peace, not for hate, you full.
Lol…people are so stupid….dude, I totally get what you were saying
WHAT?? How in the world can you possibly believe that only Americans and Jews are capable of loving and taking care of their children while completely referring to the rest of the world as animals?!!? You need to get your head checked out.
I sincerely hope that this is sarcasm, not disgusting, sickening racism.
@Peter Hindrup: i think thats why Hollywood making so many films contain child abuse and crimes.. for you those movies just some imagination or you just that stupid.
@all: This is the worst part of countries they make look like humanity are different from one another, in fact every human is equally tested on each capabilities. but ppl to blinded by their own problem that they forget to help each others and share the joy once they had and drown to deep when they got problem..
Sarcasm education for those who don’t get sarcasm:
You simply do not understand! Those creatures, those ‘others’, they do not care for their children, in a day or two they will for get that they ever had them. And anyway, these creatures are so primitive, live in such squalor that they would die at an early age, anyway.
– The use of the word ‘others’ in quotes, immediately after ‘creatures, as well as the absurd tone of this paragraph makes it sarcastic. Why is it absurd? Because Peter writes “they do not care for their children, in a day or two they will forget that they ever had them.” Now, who says something like that? Either someone insane … OR someone who is ridiculing people who consider children killed in drone attacks less-than-human (or their parents for that matter.) How do we know Peter is not insane? Keep reading.
Only ‘we’ Americans care for our children, suffer lasting hurt, we are the exceptional people — alongside the Jews, that is.
– Only ‘WE’ Americans care for our children. Please note the word ‘we’ is inside quotes. Peter IS making fun of his own culture. WE AMERICANS. To believe only Americans care about their children is to be absurd. Peter is making fun of his own culture. Then he brings in Jews. Which, again, should be a clue about the sarcastic tone of this post. Israel demonstrates the same indifference when it considers the death of Palestinian children as collateral damage.
So, a resounding NO to those of you who believe Peter is evil personified. He’s actually saying something else. Learn to understand sarcasm.
How in the world can any of you believe that this person both has this viewpoint and uses such advanced vocabulary simultaneously? How stupid can you be? The best part is many of you used this “opportunity” to get up on your high horse and criticize what he said. You are essentially all yelling at Andy Kaufman for not being a real wrestler. Does it really take a comment that over-the-top and that absurdly bigoted to make you feel like, finally, now you can unleash all of that pent up critical thinking and exercise your ability to argue?
Actually the best thing about this comment is that it is the only possible perspective for one who is to believe that America’s foreign policy could have any moral justification and everyone here is completely appalled by it. Well played, my friend.
my heart bleeds for Afghans. So long as Afghans remain slaves to Punjabi majority terror, they will be slaughtered, butchered, oppressed.
Pakistan’s minorities, Baloch, Sindhis, Pashtuns, need liberation from Punjabi terror.
I do hope you are being ironic…
Comment was made with intention to make Americans look bad, and to provoke more hatred toward US (“alongside Jews that is”), only last sentence reveals some sarcasm, which broke out since he obviously was unable to maintain gimmick.
No need for that, CNN’s new darling Fran Thousand doing pretty good job !
You are just a freak just like one of the Nazi ass. Bloody so called pathetic American. People like you initiate terrorism… and it’s not a rocket science to figure it out being a prudent man. You are rhetoric, cataclysmic piece of self praising shit who has a misconception that you are the noble men.
I was totally down with this sarcastic comment, until you added that bit about Jews at the end. If you have beef with Israel (Completely understandable), then say Israel. Don’t group all Jews in with them.
I’d hazard a guess that the the inclusion of “the jews” is more about America’s/American politicians infatuation with israel, rather than I’ll will on part of the author of this comment. I don’t know though, It’s a charitable interpretation.
Yea, there is plenty to complain about Israel’s humanitarian actions, particularly against Pakistan. That said, Judaism is not a country, and Israel is not a religion. Sadly, the fact that both are so close has resulted in intolerance towards Jews in some people. We need to work to pull Israel off it’s Christian conservative pedestal, while emphasizing Israel does not represent all Jews on the planet. Seriously, the race card is pulled every time someone critizes Israel in a public forum. We need to counter this.
well done Peter, making them think, just not in the right direction, no fault of your own just people.
This could be one reason of growing hatred against the US. Tactics and policies of double standards should be shun. Being created by US, these Taliban people and terrorists are now hounding the US. You need to create confidence as well as it’s time to cut assistance to ultra radicals through the rascals of Saudi Arabia.
Peter, thank you for recognizing the “creatures” living in Afghanistan, their life expectancy is very low. Being very natural to their instincts the “creatures” go back to procreation so their kind can survive. However these are “creatures” still. The best of military might from the best nations of the world is still trying to figure out how to domesticate, train, tame these “creatures” and the success of the soldiers of the best military is if they survived their tours of duty and are still sane after that.
I suppose these “creatures” living in Afghanistan should be labeled “dangerous” and “endangered” and should therefore be protected. I suppose that is the agenda of the most powerful armies working out there. May be you with all your wisdom and worldly knowledge can help this to happen.
Unfortunately, for American people, the initial act of procreation i.e. sex has become more recreation and there is a thriving industry around it. Birthrates are so low that soon the country would be facing negative population growth amongst the so-called Americans.
By the way, who are these so-called Americans cause the native Americans have been reduced to a fraction. the so-called Americans are immigrants from the rest of the world where they couldn’t confirm to the culture, traditions etc. or just wanted to escape Or they were introduced as slaves or cheap labour from parts of the world.
hay peter I just don’t like the word ” creatures ” used by you. they are loved ones as you are for your parents if you know your exact father. and thank you for using this word because words used by any person shows his mentality and the way of thinking of that whole area. and being american you shows how third class thinking you people have. You people are real terrorists not any one else.I pray from God that may He grant me a chance to destroy you, Ameen.
hay peter I just don’t like the word ” creatures ” used by you. they are loved ones as you are for your parents if you know your exact father. and thank you for using this word because words used by any person shows his mentality and the way of thinking of that whole areayou are living in. and being american you shows how third class thinking you people have. You people are real terrorists not any one else.I pray from God that may He grant me a chance to destroy you, Ameen.
What a holier than everyone else American. only “YOU” are humans and others are creatures.wow I can’t even believe there are 200 plus americans who are as dumb as u who believe so..And why not. The idea that everyone else’s lives matter less is spread by USA in the name of nationality. What a bunch of craps. You do not need to have a citizen ship to be a human. Everybody loves their children, I have not known any study tht shows that only those with American citizen ships are capable of loving and feeling of hurt. Rest does not have feelings. What a pathetic stupid and disrespectful bunch of fools you are.
Are you a born idiot or did you take classes?
Peter Hindrup, you are a disgrace to humanity. They are human beings. How can you forget that. Shame on you.
He is not a born Idiot you see he is telling himself the fact ” he is American ” that makes him so ignorant of the mankind ……..
Anyone with a 3 digit IQ would know the guy was being sardonic.
Those of you that can’t see the sarcasm of this note are truly fools.
Thats a sad reply! They already kill the man that “plan” the 9/11 attack! Its the same, its an act of terrorism
[…] Of course, only a foreign reporter would ask this: […]
Of course the bombing of the family in Afghanistan was an act of terrorism. So are all the various drone attacks authorized by the President on mere terrorist suspects and that have resulted in the deaths of innocent people all over the world. Our President is himself guilty of terrorism, of murder. There is simply no denying this glaring, shameful fact. Yet the people have been somehow dumbed down to accepting it with scant protest.
The President granted himself dictatorial powers by signing the NDAA bill last January, which measure was deemed nothing less than an act of high treason by some of the most prominent watchdogs of our democracy. Any of us can now be hauled off and detained indefinately as “enemy combatants” wihout due process solely at the Presidents whim, just like the notorious Lettres du Cache issued by the Kings of France prior to the Revolution. Just you watch , our Constitutional rights are being insidiously undermined and the Constitution itself will be ultimately dismantled by the new fear-based regime that’s beginning to emerge like a fatal cancer within our government as a direct result of the anti-terrorists laws that are in place now.
Matthew Keys, good job! American exceptionalism really has Americans believing that we are better, kinder, smarter, and that our own terrorism and murders are better, kinder, smarter, and always, justifiable. All reporters should be asking these questions. All people should be asking these questions.
Jay Carney’s stated the word “War” in his response to Amina. The U.S. Constitution states only the U.S. Congress has the right to declare war on another nation or state. When did the U.S. Congress officially vote (not a meaningless resolution) nevertheless authorize a declared war on the country of Afganistan or the state of Al CIA ada or Osama Bin Laden? The actions of the current individual occupying the White House in Afganistan and the statement by his press secretary prove both and the entire current administration are in violation of the U.S. Constitution and should either be impeached or resign.
Problem is the Powers-That-Be will make sure their replacements also violate the U.S. Constitution
Uh-oh. I bet that reporter’s next assignment will be a first hand expose on Guatanamo Bay.
Thanks Noodlz!
Yes, sarcasm!!! I was born in New Zealand. In am not an ‘American’. My ‘almost’ full time occupation is attempting to raise awareness of the plight of the Palestinians and exposing Israeli propaganda and US barbarities.
Looking at the responses here, I will have to try this a little more often,
Peter Hindrup
Sarcasm is hard to convey. Not knowing you I would have guessed you were just another under informed, overly misled American.
I have heard from my non-US friends that US Americans have a hard time with sarcasm. I protested at the time, but… it appears they were, perhaps, correct. (Though it seemed clear to me that it was a sarcastic statement.) It is also a sad fact that there appear to be a disturbing number of people who come at least close to sincerely believing what you said with sarcasm…
More disturbing is how many people sincerely believe what was said, despite it being pointed out as sarcasm by a number of people.
Lol. My cats have more of a Brian than 80% of the morans. But. It sometimes take the painting of a harsh reality to make your point. These people here though…. worthless wastes of time, that almost makes it seem like your wasting your time. Sorry.
You are sick people putting images like this for whatever reason. While I will agree with the premise, I am sickened by your methods.
unfriended. You are hurting the casue
This is very disingenuous. This was not a drone strike outside of a war zone; the US does that and that’s unquestionably terrorism, though it has never resulted in 11 death of children. But this was civilian war casualty. Just like the 45 million civilian dead in WWII, there are lots of civilian deaths in the Afghanistan War, caused by both sides, not just NATO. The blood of these children is as much on the hands of the Taliban as it is on the West’s.
If war is terrorism, then yes, this is terrorism. If not, then no — this is just war. Either way, it’s sinister and disingenuous to implicate just one side as the guilty party.
Pakistan isn’t a war zone any more than Boston is. Attacking where you know civilians are is terrorism.
If that’s your definition of terrorism than the word terrorism is meaningless. And you’d have to be extraordinarily foolish to define terrorism that widely. What war has ever been fought where there was absolutely zero risk of civilian casualties? Unless it’s a battle fought by navy ships in the middle of the ocean, there are always going to be risks to civilians. That your post got 70 thumbs up shows me how many obtuse people there are walking around me.
I think it’s fair to say that war is terrorism, whenever it extends beyond the clash of two armies.
exactly when did Congress issue a declaration of war against Afghanistan?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war_by_the_United_States
war IS terrorism…always. using human and natural resources to destroy human and natural resources is the most disturbing form of insanity. anyone who seeks war upon others needs to be pulled from their position of power by the people and put on a quiet farm someplace, far from the halls of power.
So was the Union a terrorist group when it defeated the Confederates? So what would you have said if you were living in 1860s? Let the south keep the slaves because to go to war with them would make us terrorists? Do you know how stupid you would sound?? What about wars of independence? Is that terrorism as well? Making absolute statements such as “war IS terrorism” is the hallmark of a simplistic mind.
[…] Click here to read the article […]
Thank God some reporter finally had the guts to ask the question, that has been on my mind…and it’s a female reporter! Thank you! Now, just because they didn’t answer this time…keep asking the question! Then ask them why…do we “Double tap” drone attacks? Could you imagine if at the Boston Marathon when the Emergency Medics & Fire Fighters, Police and good Samaritans responded a second bomb went off annihilating them?
that is a very good point Syd Vushus……. what is the justification for double tap drone strikes…… it seems to me that is a large part of the civilian deaths causation…. and the antipathy of the drone operators/
well said.
Fred:
Many would agree with your not liking my methods, however they do get responses/reactions/replies.
When I go to demonstrations on behalf of the Palestinians my placard has the most horrendous colour photos of the slaughtered children I can find. On the other side I have facts, details. The people who I protest with consider this beyond the pale, offensive!
It stops people, it brings people questioning, it causes anger, even fury. THAT is what I want. I count it if just for two minutes I can force people to face what we of the West inflict upon people, then I may have a seed — may have!
Offensive? Compared to what? Look at the pic of the kids, are they not beautiful, how could anybody not have loved them? Can anything be more offensive than the manner of their deaths?
Do you not think over-exposing such pictures serves to de-sensitize us? Just asking.
When was the last time you saw such images?
If you are seeing too many such pictures, then the cause is already lost
[…] via Reporter Asks White House if U.S. Airstrikes That Kill Afghan Civilians Qualify as ‘Terrorism’ |…. […]
In terrorism, the purpose is to kill innocent people. In war, the targets are military, extremist or government groups that would not hesitate to kill in return. While it is true that innocent people die in both, to say that the differences of intent are irrelevant is just silly.
another thing, why US & its allies(Israel) alone can use nuclear weapon? When other countries cannot? If you are truly fair, all nuclear weapon should be disbanded. It seems like US try to control the whole world themselves (which seems more likely to me). That’s why most of the people hate you, America! You are such an arrogant. How long you are going to finish invading other countries?
Because nobody expects the US to start randomly lobbing nukes over the drop of a hat. I can’t say the same for places like N. Korea. Be careful what you ask for.
Hawaiian Subjects of the Kingdom of Hawaii can identify with the dynamics of U.S. foreign policy since we have been under prolonged belligerent occupation. The U.S. invaded our democratic country, committing acts of terrorism and continuously violates the law of occupation and our neutrality. There was never a lawful treaty of annexation and have suppressed the truth from U.S. Americans. The U.S. has been destroying lives, lands and oceans in the Pacific and thus viewed as the epitome of terrorism.
JD you think the US govt’s purpose is to ‘get bad guys?’
First, our govt defines “any military-aged men” as “insurgents.” So that after we bomb, we can label as many as possible “insurgents” after the fact. This demonstrates how corrupt our moral position is as we attack homes, villages, and lands. Second, the whole fucking world is a “battlefield” to the United States. The goal of the powers-that-be is to destabilize and establish control over key strategic locations for both resources and positioning for global control vis-a-vis China, Russia, etc. Individual soldiers doubtless want to help the innocent and get the bad guys but the US war machine could not care less about any of that. And guess what – our sheer power, used for coups, invasions, occupations, and destabilizations throughout history has made US the group that not only doesn’t hesitate to “kill in return” but also the initiator of the killing. You are so, so naive if you see 9-11 but none of the vast numbers of acts of aggression perpetrated by us against so many countries. We PREFER extremist governments b/c they are the ones most likely to sell out their people in return for power. We arm them. We arm everyone. Weapons are our number one export.
Stop misquoting me. I never said the US was innocent. I said that their intent was different. In war, countries kill each other for gain, either political or monetary. In terrorism, people kill for the sake of killing. Not saying that either is innocent, but to say that they are the same is just stupid, you ignorant bitch (pardon the profanity, not usually my style, but based on your post it seems to be your standard).

I’m curious do you even fact-check your ludicrous statements? If you can’t even get this right it’s hard to take anything else you say seriously. :

Of course it’s not terrorism. Amerika is fighting a WAR against the evil forces of 3-year-old potential AlQaeda members and to preserve DEMOCRACY – (Sarcasm, as I seem to need to say it)
How can it not be terrorism? they already captured/killed osama bin laden long time ago and the afghan army can take care of the taliban themselves. So why are the american army still doing there! The whole purpose of this was for them to capture osama in the first place. So therefore this is an act of terrorism from themselves after when the mission was done.
Its sad that american citizen is paying for the war as it being taken from their tax money but yet the government doesn’t spend the money on peoples health, especially those who cant afford health insurance or even go to the hospital to get treated or people who are too poor.
The whole system of america in regards to politic, war, presidents and government is messed up and all of them has 1 thing in-comment and that is to control everything that is on this earth. they will only lead themselves to destruction and yet they have the courage to say that they are fighting terrorism, well guess who caused this problem? its simple its the government and the president of america, not the people of america.
the journalist who asked this question is a young egyptian journalist whose focus was human rights all over the world.
What America has been doing since 9/11 is simply an act of terrorism under the pretense of liberating the countries they have been fighting of terrorism and terrorist groups which are the very same groups that were hailed in the 80s and 90s as freedom fighters.
As for the person who referred to the Afghanis as animals, well shame on you and yes I agree that is the ideology that rendered most of the world hate the US.
note: the journalist’s name is Amina Ismail working for McClatchy
i find it very convenient that when americans define a war zone it’s usually referring to “their” country. the fallacy is that there are always two sides to war: us and them. logically, the u.s. could also be considered a war zone since we are in fact a country at war. how arrogant of us to start a neverending cycle of war for corporate profit and arbitrarily define the war zone as whatever poor and needy country we happen to be occupying at the time. of course the bombs in boston could have been planted by some obese nutjobs waging a War on Fitness for all i know. all i’ve read so far is that the suspect is a saudi.
We live in a country where our own US military is allowed to rape fellow troops and other citizens and the DoD and Gov acknowledge this and to nothing. They don’t care about another country and their kids. If we hurt our own it says it all.

Check out my article on NATO strike… A line of little bodies, anti-drone action and voices of resistance… http://blog.approximatetargetfilm.com/a-line-of-little-bodies-anti-drone-action-and-voices-of-resistance/
“The claim that ‘our side’ never targets civilians is familiar doctrine in violent states. And there is some truth to it. Powerful states, like the United States, do not generally try to kill particular civilians. Rather, they carry out murderous actions that they and their educated classes know will slaughter many civilians, but without specific intent to kill particular ones. In law, the routine practices might fall under the category of depraved indifference, but that is not an adequate designation for standard imperial practice and doctrine. It is more similar to walking down a street knowing that we might kill ants, but without intent to do so, because they rank so low that it just doesn’t matter. Thus Clinton’s bombing of the main pharmaceutical plant in a poor African country (Sudan) might be expected to lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, as it apparently did. But since we did not aim at particular ones, there is no guilt, Western moralists assure us. And the same holds in much more extreme cases, which are all too easy to enumerate. … There is no good term for this form of moral depravity, arguably worse than deliberate slaughter, and all too familiar.”
-Noam Chomsky

In WW2 we lost 60 million people. 60 million!! Casualties are trending downward and there is irrefutable proof to prove this. Unfortunately this is a war and to expect a war with no innocent casualties is foolish.
How about we expect to avoid starting wars of aggression, which the Nuremburg Trials declared to be the worst war crime of all, in the first place?
And, since we are “at war,” can’t we just be realistic and shrug the Boston bombing off as collateral damage? B/c, shit happens, and it’s better than WW2. (sarcasm.)
it’s unfortunate you were not at the bombing in Boston and one of it’s casualties… then we could line your dead body up with the others to show the travesty of war… of course you would just be a casualty of war and not a victim of terrorism because the United States deserves to be attacked…. right?
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that people that frequent this page and “hate the united states” are too stupid to know what sarcasm is and too stupid to know what terrorism is.
. If there isn’t real peace pretty soon this planet is doomed.. there’s radiation all over from that earthquake-tsunami-nuclear reactors went down and animals dying and our food is contaminated do the tiniest thing, DNA. Sucks.. and not everyone subscribes to the desert religions. i live on the continent of America. I believe in the Mother Earth and Great Spirit. Am tired of your wars.
There’s no such thing as “peace”. If there is please give me a historical example. I’m not big on religion but if I’m not mistaken even Jesus had to create a few floods to wipe out bad people.
Sucks for the innocent people and animals.who had no accessible means to make it to the boat before the big storm because they lived on another continent. Talk about innocent casualties.
People also told women there was no such thing as “equality.” The Wright Brothers were doubtless told there was no such thing as an “airplane.”
Also, sex-trafficking has existed for centuries so we should probably just be practical about that and not try to end it.

Actually though she have a point I am an American and she is asking abslouteley a valid questions. Pls on AMerican news channels they never shows what people are suffereing from the bombing in Iraq or Afghanistan. 😀
this story reminds me of a quote by gandhi: “What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?” Mahatma Gandhi

Don’t forget that 9/11 has NOT been properly explained.
There are still unanswered questions (most prominently, why did WTC 7 implode?).
The bombs, poison letters and now the Waco bombing are a very concerted attack. It must have been done by very professional people – positioned in multiple states – and there aren’t many out there. The timing is also incredible. The gold market is behaving funny too. Please keep your eyes open and DON’T BLINDLY BELIEVE OFFICIAL STATEMENTS. Do your own research! The JFK Library was targeted by some incendiary device, although no connection has been done to the Marathon bombings (which itself has not been solved).
Some incendiary device? Yeah, probably a toaster or a microwave… conspiracy theories are ridiculous. Granted, the popular news sites are biased, but your “own research” is impossible. And when people tell you to do that on the internet, it usually means reading schizophrenic people’s blogs.

Thank you Amina. Thank you many times.
To answer Peter Hindrup ( First of all, I don’t know, why do Doctors allow mental patients to used internet)
Peter, I can bet, that you did not even step out of your state forget about going out of USA, and that’s why you have such a small canvas of thinking.
And you know what, forget it, it is not even worth talking to you about the way you are. I don’t know you were born this way or you were dropped by doctor as you were born, which has affected your brain capacity.
Irfan, you obviously haven’t read Peter’s subsequent responses
Thank you Amina. Thank you many times.
God job Amina, good job Rania. Thanks. And keep it up. Shared lots. 🙂

The reporter needs to educate herself that combatants hiding among civilians are war criminals. It is legit to target legit targets, duh, ya fools. they are not immune just because they hide among non-combatants, which is as I say a war crime. the bits asking the question is a propagandist not a reporter. or she’s just ignorant.

When the Taliban cowards stop literally hiding behind children as shields the children will stop dying. Those cowards are killing their own children, not the drone strikes. Correct me, are we not at war? .. I am not asking, not do I care if you agree with the war…. And the reporter comparing this to the Boston bombing? Are you f’ing kidding me.. SHE is sick.
Let me get this straight – since the Taliban hide among the children, we have to bomb the children??
Whatever atrocities they do to their own people does not excuse the atrocities WE do to their people.
Lana, a refreshingly clear viewpoint in this page that is largely filled with anger and stupidity. War IS terrorism; terrorism IS war; the united states started a war on a seemingly contrived excuse, very similar to the Gulf of Tonkin incident that ushered the US military into Vietnam, having started a war it is incredible that they are offended/hurt/confused when they receive a response in kind. Amina must be one of the most courageous journalists in the US today. I applaud her and thank her and hope that she remains at liberty and at her work. As for the orwellian doublespeak that she received in reply, clearly indicates the duplicity of those in charge of that nation and that war. War is always a terrorist act.

When we all rise up with one voice and say we have had enough of killing only then will children be safe in their homes. Only when we all refuse to manufacture any weapon that kills will we be able to recognise that we are all one family and that if you kill someone else’s child you are also killing your own loved ones.
We all are responsible for the world we live in.
When we reject a violent response and return with compassion, only then will an age of wisdom and peace come to this beautiful world that we have the privilege to be born into.
Until then we live in an age of ignorance and fear.
Please remember that what the war mongers and weapons manufacturer’s fear most is peace.
We all have a responsibility to find that peace within ourselves and refuse in any way to assist those that would slaughter our children in any place for any reason on the entire surface of this planet.

What Peter said is 100% believable, no it is not that obvious, this is how most Americans think deep in their mind and YES they would still say they are sorry for that picture.
why? because *most* Americans are hypocrites even if they don’t know it, examples:
Americans love Jesus but Love guns more. (Jesus does NOT love guns, at least stop claiming to be Jesus’s biggest fans! they post on FB about Jesus then the next post is about guns! Please!)
Americans want “war” on terrorism but not babies killed (you don’t start wars and expect no babies killed, you find the reasons behind terrorism and deal with it, no we are not jealous, keep your democracy and guns and NGOs away from us, and you won’t hear about Terrorism again)
They appose bombings but re-elect the people who send troops/drones (Really?).
They hate black people but feel sorry for native Indians. (If you hate Blacks then loving native Indians does not make you less racist)
If *most* Americans and Europeans did not think like that we wouldn’t be seeing these kind of pictures month after month, year after year.
F**k Usama Bin Ladin and F**K American lobbies!
Rate down as much as you want, won’t change the truth!
Where oh where are the Obama voters on this page railing over the slaughter of Christians all throughout the dark continent and else where. Why no comments about the undeclared war on “others” in muslim dominated countries. “America can’t do it but the other cultures “equal” to ours can in the name of cleansing their homeland of undesirables.” Listen to yourself people! So, you think apartheid was/is horrible. Take a close look at South Africa and Zimbabwe. Two real “success” stories and not one of you would want to discuss any of the current issues facing that area.

Maybe you didn’t notice, but we real liberals are CRITICIZING Obama, you knucklehead. The only difference between you tea baggers and the Obama-supporting so-called “liberals” is that you tea baggers wilfully and enthusiasticly support fascism, while the Obama supporters passively support it while being brainwashed into believing they aren’t.
We, freedom-loving people who are of sound mind and intelligence, stand up against BOTH you and your Obama-loving ideological brethren.
Wow. I agree with the point in this article, but this comment is incredibly ignorant. How about you actually get to know most Americans or maybe not use tired old stereotypes.
(btw it’s far more likely for people to be racist towards indigenous people than African-American… but I’m not surprised you didn’t know that)
I have to ask, why where the insurgents hiding amongst women and children in the first place? Sounds familiar to me… Ah yes, Palastinian thugs do the same… I think it’s a cultural thing. Treat your women like property… Hide behind them when firing on legitimate soldiers who obey rules of engagement…
It’s contingent to where the battlefield is being fought. It’s not a cultural thing. If we move the battlefield overtly to the U.S.A., you would find the same dynamics on U.S. soil. They are defending their country and people on their soil; the NATO/U.S. have invaded their sovereign territory unlawfully and therefore the invading soldiers are illegitimately there and those mercenaries like Blackwater do NOT obey conventional rules of engagement (they don’t have to). We’ve seen many cases whereby conventional soldiers do not follow rules of engagement or rules of war or law. Some take orders from their superiors who commit war crimes and against civil laws. So don’t be the pot calling the kettle black. If situations were reversed; what would be your response? There are good and bad on both sides of the battles. Look to the ones that declare the war and lord themselves over their minions. People will always defend their families, their lands, and their own pursuit of happiness. We are faced with corporate wars controlled by military industrial complexes for pecuniary and control reasons.

It is clear to see from the comments here that many Americans have trouble reading and many of those that can, have trouble understanding. And when they don’t understand they get angry without really knowing who to get angry at. Usually it’s those they already have gripes with, like Muslims, Jews, Liberals, Republicans, the government, immigrants or the neighbors.
The sad part is that the group of haters are usually those that are uninformed, misinformed, uneducated or indoctrinated and brainwashed. To us outside you’re a bunch of confused people.
And still, millions of Americans thinks they are living in the Best Country of the world. Little do they know about what happens outside their borders, comparing themselves to Mexico or what they read about Afghanistan.
The American Dream? It always was about opportunities and growth. So what is left of that? Opportunities are still plentiful, but for the rich only. And the only real growth is in the number of guns, homeless people and the prison population.
Poor, poor America.

Overthrow the government
“overthrow” by making it irrelevant. Stop paying taxes. Stop taking “benefits” from it. Stop acknowledging it as ‘your government’. Stop hating whom it wants hated. Stop hating people and save that for institutions. Stop asking it for permission to do what you have perfect rights to do. And, Rob, those in real control do it under the guise of ‘government (you know, cops and military types)’, right?
Overthrow the government
It would be wiser to overthrow those that have the money and the power. The government has become irrelevant a long time ago.

America’s goal in Afghanistan is NOT to make political statements or to try to change people’s minds by TARGETING civilians. It’s not terrorism.
You can argue that the way the war is being conducted is irresponsible or maybe immoral, not to try to equate it with not the actions of people who want to sow fear by targeting civilians, and people who find this behavior justified, is wrong.
I would argue that the stated goals of the US are at this point not necessarily important in this question of what appears to be US sponsored terrorism. What is important is that the actions of the US are beginning to take on the shape and form of what looks like terrorism, smells like terrorism, feels like terrorism and results in terrorism. The actions, not the theoretical, legal justifications of this more than ten year old US led insurgency result in the same senseless destruction of innocent human lives.that happened in my home town of Boston, Massachusetts on Monday, April 15th, 2013. Simply because we call it something else does not make it so.
The truth is that the use of drones results in nearly exactly the same terror and unimaginable suffering and destruction of innocent human life as does any terrorist attack you can think of. You’re welcome to call it what ever it is you want, but make no mistake about it: the de facto reality of the actual human quotient of these missions is terror; little girls and little boys are being chemically burned, maimed, disfigured, killed; their mothers and fathers are being ambushed, their homes invaded under darkness, their lives brutally taken by monsters with night vision. This is indeed terror.
The US is in fact not in an actual, open, military conflict at this point, but drones are nevertheless being deployed.. There is no obvious shelling and constant news coverage with gunfire and plumes of smoke across your television screen. This would otherwise signal to the population that a war is happening in their neighborhoods, in their country. That is not what is happening. And to understand this in any other way is not only dishonest, but it would suggest that one has completely taken leave of the concrete, physical, real world tangibilities of what is in fact happening. That is truly the most dangerous part of this unending parade of horrors: unreality.
So, the sum total of what is happening then in Afghanistan is that entire civilian populations are being taken by surprise and without warning by the deployment of secret, covert drone missions, and this is done under the cover of night or in some such other clandestine manner. As mentioned, these surprise attacks result in the maiming and killing of so many an unsuspecting innocent, and all this because the US believes that a sympathizer may be somewhere in these otherwise ordinary, civilian places. If the distance and the remoteness of these far off lands results in this not sounding like an unequivocal act of terror to you, then I would invite you to Boston.

I was talking to a client the other day, asking if she had watched the news. She, an American doctor, said how we Americans show a ridiculous display of self pity when we have terrorist attacks. Try growing up in Lebanon, walking to school and having the know how to dodge bombs by the sound. Your classmate crying because her brother was hit while playing soccer with friends. We don’t know mass terror like any other countries do.
You’re echoing my sentiments exactly.

I only wish that bombs were falling in American cities like they do in Afghanistan and iraq maybe then the people of that nation would realize their ass hat of a president was a phoquing jack ass
Just American cities or all of NATO cities? And are the Attacks on Afghanistan provoked or unprovoked ? And how about Iraq? NATO should not suffer, just Americans? You are just another example of the uneducated paying attention only enough to be pissed off at one side. There is a long history. LONG. That is why there is NATO and that is why all whole is involved is wrong. NOT just America and not just Iraq. Although they all are equally to blame.

Peter’s comment is so obviously satire that I’m surprised that there’s such a long discussion. Oh well. The spokesman’s non-reply is standard operating procedure that means the U.S. bombings are never, under any circumstances, terrorism, only attacks by the gov’t’s enemies qualify as terrorism. My strongest condolences to those who die everywhere because of the madness, those in Boston and Afghanistan and Iraq.

Yes. It is terrorism. The terrorist Taliban should be strongly condemned for using children as human shields as they plan to DELIBERATELY attack civilian populations. NATO or the US do not deliberately target civilian populations. The Taliban and other terrorist organizations do. And then the cowards hide in civilian populations to create unwilling martyrs to their cause. These deaths are on THEIR hands.

Beautiful question. And the answer is there is no difference; both are act of terror. Innocent civilians are living in constant fear. Drone strikes alone have killed over 2,000 innocent; totally it is estimated 120,000 civilian fatalities since 2003. Left wing or right wing; america or Iraq….It dose not matter. They are are brothers and sisters, it is not until we look beyond our own boarders will we truly ever find world peace. This is immoral and no one should have to live in constant fear of being blown up.

First of all, all of you need to read the article and understand what is true and what is false. Also, understand that the history and complexity between the middle East and NATO did not begin within the last 12 years. Also, look up who and what Nato is, http://www.nato.int/nato-welcome/ That is a start. Next, understand, both foreign and domestic, what it means to have your chain pulled. The original statement was to create the blog that followed it. Which, we are all victims. I don’t know that the original sarcastic comment, which was in poor taste is an American or someone suggesting to be an American. I don’t know and I don’t care. But I did enjoy reading comments for those of you silly enough to believe his commments. Oh, yes, and while you are at it, you may want to see if the country you are in, is also part of NATO. That would mean that you were involved with the attacks.
Just a thought. Maybe residents of that country, should put pressure on their people to stop antagonizing the opposition. Maybe the bullets would stop flying. But that would be way to smart and productive.
Love this comment. It’s so easy to blame just the US (or whoever), but the truth is that most of us are involved, indirectly or not.

a time will come when the world will go against the so called AMERICAN AND THE ZIONIST EVEN tree wount hide you guys from the d…. INNOCENT lives taken by name terrorism, between bush and osama who has killed more innocent lives. this war is getting out of hands where is U.N while broad daylight innocent lives taken down. only GOD can provide justice.tell me y is Africa the poorest continent yet its the richest in minerals so does this mean its pyscological slave trade.
MOhamed, I think that sometimes its harder to look within than to look outward. I do think American has made mistakes. However, I don’t believe that America is alone when it comes to war and bullets. God will provide justice. But, until everyone understands that they are not the only country, that thier God is not everyone’s God, you must take account for your actions. America is a very young country. And many people from many cultures want to live in Americia. And Americans welcome and tolerate people of all nations. More so than most other countries. Americans are far more forgiving on many topics than other countries. There are also a wide variety of personallities in America. Some are libral, conservative, extreme, careless, etc. America has every type of personality availble to humanity. So when you say that Americans can’t hide-who are you referring to? Just Bush and Obama? Or people who are poor? Or the rich? Or, the illegial immigrant? Or the legal immigrant? The young? The Old? The visitior from Iraq or Iran or Italy? How about the Asian couple trying to escape Tyranny?

No drones, no bombs, no guns, no money. Then we may have peace. Actually just no money since that is what drives the other 4. I for one choose to grow small and not participate in spending money on any corporate controlled entity when I can otherwise buy from a local merchant. I am growing small. When I retire I will ride a mule to town so I don’t participate in funding the need for oil. I will go off-grid so I don’t participate in the power grid that is too large when roof-top solar is sustainable and less intrusive on beautiful open viewscapes. Money is not my master. My small world will be happier and I will never hold a weapon.

President Obama said recently “Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror.” He uses statements like these to show the people that he is a very just president when in actual fact he is contradicting his own statement because of all the innocents that are being killed in places like Afghanistan and Yemen. I think he should’ve said “Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, its an act of terror, except when the USA do it”
You sound like one of those radicals that likes to forget the pain and suffering your country has caused, and justify all that you do to distroy humanity, but thinkning you are working for the better good. I guess your bombs to kill Americans are nicer bombs.

My country? Great assumption there, I’m british so your argument is invalid. But I agree that my country, Britain has caused a lot of pain and suffering with America.
Destroy humanity? A small group of radicals who carried out terrorist attacks somehow reflect on the whole muslim community?
The difference between me and you is that I condemn what groups like Al-Qaeda have done and also what America has done whilst you seem to support what America has done and that makes you look like the radical in my eyes not me. You are actually supporting a form of terror and murder whilst I am not supporting any.
For every 1 suspected terrorist America kills 20 civilians have to die as collateral, seem just to you? Another thing is that America likes to look like its a very peaceful nation when it is committing international crimes and breaking official treaties whilst the terrorist groups dont show two faces like America.
So before you go on and try claim you have suffered more than muslims, take a look at how much America has done.
The only reason someone would be against another would be if that one person has caused the other guy some trouble. Even before 9/11 America had planned to take over Afghanistan by giving them support against the russians and then to use the people who take control of Afghanistan to be its puppets. The taliban however are not people who like being puppets and so thats how it started, if America or Britain or any colonial forces keeps out of our affairs then muslims would be more than happy to stay out of yours, but then again, where will the oil come from then?

What we are doing in Afghanistan isn’t a war anymore. It’s a slaughter. And as for “being mindful of our objectives”, would that be the objectives of guarding the opium and the $4 trillion deposit of lithium for the bankster/corporate interests?

To be honest the real difference between what the US is doing and actual terrorism is intent. Unlike actual terrorist, the US doesn’t target civilians. Civilians may be in the area where the targets are, but the targets are not actually the civilians. As cold as it may sound, the civilians are just collateral damage. It’s what happens when terrorist or military targets hide amongst civilians. The terrorist use civilians as human shields, hoping the US won’t attack with so many civilians around. Usually we don’t, sometimes we do. Sometimes it’s bad intel, that results in the deaths of civilians, but the fact of the matter is that the US isn’t doing it on purpose. When terrorist attack, the point is to kill civilians. To kill as many people as possible. To terrorize the populace. That is their intent.
I know it doesn’t make a difference to the parents of the dead children, that it was more likely than not an accident. But the question is what is the difference between what the US does when it kills civilians as opposed to what terrorist do when they kill civilians. The answer is the US doesn’t mean to kill civilians. The US doesn’t want to kill civilians. Terrorist have every intent on killing as many civilians as possible, that is the difference.

I don’t think that intent, whatever one may define that as, could ever justify the de facto results of what looks and smells like unmitigated terrorism. To use civilians as a human shield is most definitely a terrorist tact, I agree, but so too is ruthlessly killing scores and scores of innocent others, the most odious and evil of which is children!. You can’t fight terrorism with terrorism because in doing so you legitimize terrorism in the minds of terrorists. That is extremely dangerous.
To call the scores of innocent civilians that the US could very easily have avoided slaughtering collateral damage is totally shocking. I mean, we are talking about innocent little boys and little girls and mothers and fathers being unspeakably maimed and disfigured by your government and their filthy drones. What in God’s name could ever justify something that horrendous? I can tell you: nothing that has happened in last 235 years. This is a disgrace, and it is destroying the name of this country and its people all over the globe!
I’ll tell you this, I could wipe out an entire countryside and justify it as a new economic policy, but it is still the unconscionable and inhuman slaughtering of innocent people. No civilized, just society could commit such atrocities, nor is there any reason for them to do so. This is insane. For god sake, there isn’t even an active military exchange happening.
Ultimately, there is no conceivable way to justify this argument. This is evil, evil, evil. Period!
SHAME ON YOU!
Taliban cowards hiding behind children is the problem here… NATO does not target civilians. Scumbag muslims hide behind children then photograph their dead bodies for bleeding hearts like you to tacitly support them. Blame us for trying to stop these evil bastards instead of blaming the vile bastards that hid behind children and fire at our troops!
Dear John,
For argument sake, If someone bombs “your” entire neighborhood causing death and pain to innocent civilians “including your family”. The intent was to kill a terrorist hiding “maybe” in one of the dozen houses. Would you justify that sort of killing?…maybe call it poor intel, and just walk off?… No sir, I seriously doubt it.
Pardon me for taking such an argument, and i wish a joyful 100 years for your family and neighborhood.
I’ve heard it said (and I agree) that the reason Americans generally don’t have the proper perspective on war is that their wars don’t occur on their own soil and haven’t for some time. The same can be said, too, of our Canadian population who gladly send our countrymen to Afghanistan and then patriotically salute their hearses from bridge overpasses when they return (as their parents, friends, spouses, and children are left with the real aftermath of war and killing). You would think that the tens of thousands of troops returning in boxes would have some effect on the population and that they would react like they did vis-a-vis Viet Nam, but doesn’t their government black out the press for that? So, controlled, brainwashed, they have no empathy for even their own, let alone the foreigners of different skin and tongue on the receiving end of their bombs. An event like this is a perfect attempt to bring the American people to understand how it is to live your life with someone trying to kill you. I lived in Israel for almost a decade and the one good (and horrible) thing I can say is at least I got a sense of living amidst bombings and gunfire, a sense of trying to live your life where life is not at all normal or safe or logical, where the bus in front of yours blows up on your way to work, and you know someone who didn’t arrive somewhere as expected realizing they must have been on that bus, where just about everyone goes to the army so the civilian population is indeed the armed forces personnel, and as such the guy who sells jeans in the market has disfiguring scarring and limps from his service, the neighbours have lost son after son in active duty, as prisoners of war, to army suicide, as well as their child on the bus to school. When war touches every part of your daily life you finally appreciate how miserable that kind of a life is. Then you want to stop it. You empathize with the other side and realize you two must make peace.
Elaine, you make an incredibly good point.
The above comment was sarcasm. Maybe not in the best taste, but sarcasm never the less.
Regarding the recording:
When he mentioned Al Qaeda and the supposed terrorist attacks on America, it would have been interesting if she’d have asked him if he was talking about the same ‘al qaeda’ who now have seats at the UN????
Seems alot of people don’t know this or don’t care. They’re constantly invading countries under the guise of looking for ‘al qaeda’ when in reality , they know exactly where they are – they’re sitting next to them at the united nations!

I want to know what I can do? I am so sick, very very sick, of seeing dead babies- they look like my children sleeping, but they are dead. This should NOT be overlooked anymore! What can I do? Where are the people fighting this? I want to help bring this to an end. Can someone help point me in the right direction?THESE ARE INNOCENT CHILDREN… I want to help.
Stop America’s war effort. Write/call to government officials at all levels. Vote your opinion by not electing those parties and leaders. To stop Viet Nam the college kids protested en masse in public. You think you’re just one person and you can’t make a difference, but if everyone did as you do (or at least enough to sway an election) you absolutely would. Sometimes it just takes 1 passionate strong-willed mover and shaker to sway public office (in the case where they are looking to activate public opinion but need input as to what that opinion is…and it might be you), but bear in mind that war is America’s prime business market. The selling of arms to both sides of a war is America’s huge enterprise, and reconstruction businesses bring in huge profits for certain key political families. You will not have it easy going against the $. However, the government controls and manipulates the public to allowing this war activity by blacking out the news of the bodies of your 18-year-olds as they return daily by the plane-load. Show the people. Tell the people. The statistics are there. You can draw your own simulation and post it. The war is utter hypocrisy. America is in thick with the Saudis for the oil. Most of the time when we are told we are at odds with China or Russia, western people are found in top positions in the “opposition’s” hierarchy. A lot of what we are told in fact isn’t true. All you need to do is be a human being and you’ll know what is right. And you’ll also know how the other people feel. They are the same. We’re all the puppets and the big guys call the shots. (That’s how it works in Israel and Palestine with secret service and armed thugs overriding the common folk’s desire to live normally.) Stop them. You have truth, compassion, rationality, and love on your side. That is stronger. Those who use force, distort truth, manipulate, and coerce are weak…and fearful (of their own weaknesses).
“Show the people. Tell the people.” You say. Isn’t that what Bradly Manning did?
I had to Google. Wow. Yes, that’s what happens. If you’re lucky enough to be deemed a nut job you can be ignored, but otherwise you’re a threat. I like to take into account facts surrounding people who the higher ups most seemed to be threatened by, enough so to take them out of the picture. That in itself is telling. After Rabin’s assassination by the secret service (not a rumour, I was in Israel listening to the official government-sensored news in Hebrew and the handler of the shooter was confirmed by the GSS to be on the Shabak payroll, and subsequently marginalized by him as a rogue acting on his own accord) policemen close to the incident wound up suspiciously having committed suicide. Physicists talking too much about the country’s nuclear program get disappeared. So the people learn to let things go. But the country is in shambles, and will be until the people make things happen as they should.
Technically, legally, and intentionally, those who die under drones are not victims of terrorism. The target of terrorism is civilians, the motivation is to coerce governments. The drone strikes of the U.S. do not intentionally – at least ostensibly – target civilians; they target terrorists, and, unfortunately, they sometimes hit civilians; that drones may terrorize is a secondary effect, and as such, does not constitute an act of “terrorism” per se. This sad reality of innocents dying is one of the costs of war: innocents will always die in wars, and this fact is accepted not only in the international community, but sanctioned in international laws and treaties. It behooves the public and politicians to carefully consider these sorts of ramifications of going to war – a thought process largely absent from today’s politics…
The reporter was right to ask that question because without knowing the motivation of the bombers, one cannot definitively say it was terrorism – it could have just been some crazy assholes. The point of her questions was to force the White House to be careful with the language it chooses. But if you’ve been following the story, you know Obama’s administration was pressured into labeling it such because the people of the U.S. are mostly unable to make these sorts of nuanced distinctions; and public officials are, for the most part, spineless panderers that bow to these sorts of pressures lest their image be damaged.
If you’re knee-jerking to this story, condemning the White House for not seeing what they’re doing as terrorism then you’re part of the same problem – just the opposite end of it. If you haven’t read the Geneva Conventions, The U.N. Charter, The UDHR, researched the drone program in detail, understand military theory and strategy, especially insurgency and counterinsurgency, the nature of intelligence and counterintelligence, as well as information warfare, then you’re just another uneducated voice spewing forth nonsense, adding to the chaotic ignorance that got this country into this mess in the first place. Turn off your TV, stop giving sensationalist stories like these your attention, and actually research the subjects for which you want to have educated opinions.

anyone that would like to compare the attacks in Afghanistan that sadly cost civillian casualties with the bombings in Boston is just plain stupid.
First of all, if you read the article it states…. “after a NATO airstrike killed several Afghan civilians, including ten children during a fierce gun battle with Taliban militants in Shultan, Shigal district, Kunar, eastern Afghanistan, Sunday, April 7, 2013. ”
It is ridiculous to compare civilian casualties in a military strike with an attack that was directed at civilians. The Boston Marathon wasn’t running through a military base, there were no legitimate military targets for them… they were simply USING TERROR against the innocent.
The attack in Afghanistan was a bombing during a fierce gun battle with Taliban militants…
NOT ONE PERSON COMMENTING on this has even bothered to be angry with the COWARDS IN the Taliban FOR HIDING BEHIND CHILDREN when engaging the US military. They do that on purpose so that bleeding hearts and asshats like this reporter can point fingers at the United States as evil baby killers.
The scumbag muslim fundamentalists that are so brainwashed and stupid they think an omnipotent being like “God” needs their help for anything.
When muslim scumbags stop hiding behind children, children casualties of war in Afghanistan will stop.
Shame on Rania Khalek and Amina Ismail for trying to compare these completely different situations to make the people PROTECTING US AGAINST EVIL seem like the EVIL Taliban.
When ALL of the Taliban are dead these sad, senseless deaths will stop.
“Cowards”, “Scumbags”, “Brainwashed” – yeah you’re just dripping with compassion for these people and their children, aren’t you. Something tells me you’re the type to make jokes about collateral damage “killing future terrorists”.
When ALL of the Taliban are dead? How do you expect that to happen? Genocide? More enemies are made with every dronestrike than we can ever hope to kill.
When US Foreign Policy doesn’t amount to : “Swing your dick round and round, steal a bunch of shit, then blame the browns!”, the senseless deaths will stop. The genesis of this terrorism crap is in our own foreign policy and its respective blowback. And that ain’t murkah hatin proppyganda – that’s from the central intelligence agency themselves. But hey what would they know about it.

‘Do you not think over-exposing such pictures serves to de-sensitize us? Just asking.’
I have been involved in Middle East activities for some eleven years. In various venues, at different times I have seen some confronting, horrific, soul sickening and emotionally tearing pics and video.
A few weeks ago at a Vietnamese presentation by a delegation on fund raising tour for the agent orange afflicted, at The Australian Institute of International Affairs venue, I saw the worst have seen.
Children and young folk, twisted, deformed, with three legs, or three arms, some looking like little octopuses, (octopi for the pedantic), one with a great cavity in his chest, and some simply indescribable.
I struggled to sit through it, feeling that if they could cope with this horror, the least I could do was stay seated, though I was not sure that I would not be physically sick.
We were assured that these were not the worst of those who ‘lived’, some had opening exposing their innards, and other horrors that I would rather forget. Then there were those that spontaneously aborted, who died, some of which were the many that developed ‘water on the brain’ where their heads grew like watermelons, attached to a tiny, tiny body.
We were also told that the deformities were of a kind with those in Iraq and Palestine where the afflictions were as a result of the depleted uranium sown across theses countries in the murderous assaults they have been subjected too. Told also that the offspring of US servicemen are throwing up such deformities.
All this is far beyond what we of the Western world see in the media, even in the more ‘tell it as it is’ media, such as online.
Do not concern yourself with becoming ‘desensitised’, there is material out there which will sicken the most hardened, even those who have learned to deal with these utter horrors.
To those where claim that it is the intention, not the result that defines terrorism.
War, historically has been used to describe one group confronting another group of more or less equally armed combatants.
Terrorism is usually used to describe the efforts of a much weaker party using what weapons it has against superior forces, often enough against their own government.
Any group using massive force against those whom have no hope of retaliating, is indulging in
terrorism’. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were acts of terrorism, because the Japanese had no air defence capability, and because Japan had been attempting the surrender unconditionally for three days before the attack on Hiroshima.
Those in tanks shooting kids throwing stone are committing terrorism, murder, war crimes. They are barely lesser cowards than are those who ‘fly’ drones, and those who authorise there use.
The Israeli assaults upon Palestinians are both terrorism and war crimes.
Again those claiming that those forces opposing the US led ‘coalition’ are cowards ‘for hiding behind their women and children’, show their appalling ignorance. In Gaza as an example, there is no space, nowhere that is safe, with hospitals, schools, food storage facilities and Red Cross centres targeted.
These all constitute war crimes, by the way.
The Gazanias have no military, no anti air defence of any sort, no heavy weaponry. Only those who are comfortable killing women and the unarmed would, or could take part.
I recommend William Blum’s ‘Killing Hope’ as a starting point to those who want to know just how vicious is, and has been, the US foreign policy since the second world war.
you are soooo right, the United States are evil. They attack little children and innocent people because spreading evil is their goal! *insert evil laugh*
Unlike the peaceful, poor, downtrodden muslims that heroically target evil Americans going about their EVIL running of races. How arrogant and grandiose they are to DARE have public events without expecting their EVIL intentions to be justifiably attacked by brave soldiers.
Peter the asshat, this photo was NOT taken in Gaza.
Afghanistan is LARGE. These asshats hide behind children for the sole purpose of creating photos shoots like the one above.
Fuck you and all the self-hating bastards like you.
So the intent of the above is what?
To demonstrate the total ignorance and crudity of the writer? I wouldn’t have thought that that was anything to be proud of.
It also clearly displays why so many across world have no time for the US.
running of races, herding of goats, attending of wedding parties

Your definitions and conceptions are somewhat off.
Terrorism, as defined by Title 22 of U.S.C. section 2656(d)(2), is “premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents;” as defined by Title 18 of U.S.C. section 2331(1)(a), is “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or of any State; (b) that appear to be intended – (I) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population (II) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (III) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping…”
War is a bit trickier as it isn’t officially defined for several reasons; however, Merriam defines it as “a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations.”
As you can see the asymmetry of the forces is irrelevant to terrorism. What you’re thinking of is guerrilla warfare and insurgency (defined by Army/Marine Corps 03-24 Field Manual as “an organized, protracted politico-military struggle designed to weaken the control and legitimacy of an established government, occupying power, or other political authority while increasing insurgent control”), which is similar to terrorism in tactics only. The difference between the former an latter, as defined in Title 18 and 22, is target and intention, i.e. noncombatants and political coercion, respectively.
That said, the U.S. in not engaged in a war in the traditional sense, though, there is room to consider it such due to the ambiguous definition/conception of the nature of war. The U.S., however, is NOT intentionally killing noncombatants so, by definition, it is NOT engaged in terrorism. What the U.S. can be said to be definitely engaged in is counterinsurgency, which the 03-24 Field Manual defines as “military, paramilitary, political, economic, psychological, and civic actions taken by a government to defeat an insurgency.” That the U.S. employs a larger force against AQ and other terrorist affiliations does NOT constitute terrorism, by legal definition.
Furthermore, that innocent civilians die in war and counterinsurgency is irrelevant to the definition of either and also does NOT constitute terrorism; and as I mentioned in my earlier post is part of the recognized and accepted cost of war as defined in the Hague and Geneva Conventions as well as slew of other international treaties and laws. The U.S. MAY be committing war crimes but you have the burden of providing proof and showing that they are indeed war crimes using international statutes to legitimately support your accusations. No one likes that innocent civilians die but it happens in war. This is why I urged that the public and the government consider it more heavily than it does before declaring it.
You bring up several other point that are also wrong because you aren’t specific enough in your examples and, as this post should make clear, you do not understand these concepts well enough. I mean no offense but you clearly are not speaking from an informed view, as evinced by your personal, connotative definitions of war, terrorism, and the like. Please, for yours and everyone else’s sake, actually do the research. Opinion without fact is just dangerous, especially when it comes to matters of life and death. And I urge everyone else to do the same, including the reporter who started this whole thread.
Not that I have even the remotest interest in discussing definitions (because they’re not really relevant here), but just because a nation or country defines its purposes as strictly prohibitive of terrorism, it in no way means that the actions of that particular state cannot effectively result in the exact same carnage and needless destruction of innocent civilian lives as any stated terrorist policy. According to that line of reasoning, any nation that says it is “just” will always be just and is effectively unimpeachable. That is obviously not even close to reasonable, nor is it what happens in actual human reality, especially not that which is defined by war.
In war, definitions are often wildly stretched to include new meanings not supported by stated purposes. And thus, practically every self defined “just” nation known has committed atrocities in war. The US is by all means no exception. .
As I have periodically argued in this thread, though, I think people in the US have a terrible case of unreality where these matters are concerned and thus have tremendous difficulty seeing their nation in anything but ideal terms. They are simply a people inextricably steeped in lore, tales and abstractions of idealism. In short, they are a people without realpolitik traditions and experiences. This is a fundamental problem with American citizen analysis of these occurrences, especially those in which their government may be suspect.
Notwithstanding, however, I do believe the US is essentially a just nation, just a very far from perfect one with its share of serious flaws. .
#Always Listening
Two things: 1) not discussing definitions is usually a copout, because 2) without an agreed upon language it’s impossible to even understand what each other means by “war,” “terrorism,” “justice” or any other word out there. That words have meanings is what gives them relevance and sense. I use the legal definitions because it defines in an authoritative – or at least denotative – way. If you don’t like the official definition propose a change; in international law, that means you’ll have to become a lawyer or an activist with clout.
If the U.S. is engaging in terrorism, that they’re just calling a war then the international community has an opportunity to bring these charges against the United States. This is problematic, indeed, but there is a formal process for these things – and it isn’t simply people yelling “the U.S. is a terroristic state!” Furthermore, the U.S. will be judged on the criteria set out in law, i.e. the definitions I’ve listed thus far. So, if you’re going to judge the U.S., you’re going to have to do it using the established legal system.
I understand what you’re saying about a nation excusing its own atrocities. Surely, history is replete with such examples. But history, too, is replete with examples of prosecutions of those countries for crimes committed while calling them something more palatable. Reality is further complicated by the fact that Justice isn’t always done even when known atrocities are committed. Moreover, life, and especially geopolitical life, is extremely complex – more so than most can even comprehend. Alliances, self preservation, the ignorance concerning what Justice really is, and many other factors prevent the right thing from being done oftentimes.
It is not news that the U.S. is a violator of human rights, international law, as well as its own domestic laws at times. But the best argument against the tyranny is commits is to use its own standards against it. Hence, the need to hold it accountable using its own definitions for crimes, terrorism, war crimes, etc. Hypocrisy – undeniable, legal, and denotative hypocrisy – exposed is a powerful tool against a tyrannous state.
What’s sad is that the U.S. is committing war crimes as well as violating Constitutional Rights but no one knows because most people aren’t doing the research, and what most people also don’t know is that the U.S. is losing some of those legal battles. Instead, people focus on bullshit stories like this one, making ridiculous arguments when they could be actually learning something about how the system works, how its prevailing at times, and where it could use assistance from an educated populace that, unfortunately, shows no interest in doing so for the most part.
Well, if you’re intent on definitions having meaning, then those definitions should at least be grounded in the way those ideas and concepts are employed at home and abroad. The entire problem here is the focus is nearly 100% on book definitions and theories, while completely ignoring the actions on the other ends of those words and ideas, thus my criticism.
Nobody would deny that theoretical underpinnings are essential, but without reference to action, then we don’t have a theory.
And just what sort of a cop out could you possibly be referring to? I’ve stated my realpolitik position pretty clearly, no mumbo jumbo, crazy bomb throwing language. And how do you know that I’m not a lawyer or even a law student for that matter?
Anyway, 90% of what you just wrote was not relevant to what I was talking about; I never addressed any of those concepts. Of course, that’s not a crime, so it’s okay. But here’s the deal. I could not disagree with you more that this is a “bullshit story” and all of the talk about how people are not properly researching, etc. In fact, people are engaging this story, talking about this story, reading about this story and, consequently, considering what, in my opinion, is an important thing for a citizen to consider: whether or not their government is well grounded in both action and law in its conduct of war and diplomacy. In fact, it would be far worse if nobody cared one bit. .

Obomber is a Monster of Depravity and Carney should be discharged for criminal negligence of either knowing and lying of the Afghanian children’s massacre or Should HAVE KNOWN (he’s the presidential press secretary fercryinaloud)!
Terrorism is the deliberate targeting of civilians for the purpose of creating fear that advances some political/strategic agenda. A child accidentally killed in a war is a tragedy, but it is not terrorism, it’s war. Over a million German civilians died in WWII. Does that make Churchill and Roosevelt terrorists? Well if your only standard is that civilians died, then I guess the Allies were morally worse than Al Queda. But anyone that seriously said that would be a buffoon. Secondly, we are fighting combatants who use children as human shields. They know they cannot win a traditional war against our troops, so they imbed themselves amongst civilians. Do you think the Taliban gives a damn about kids beyond the propaganda value of their dead bodies?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/17/taliban-using-human-shields_n_465119.html
I think most people are smart enough to know that our troops are not intentionally killing children in Afghanistan. People are opposed to the war in Afghanistan(which is fine), so they are using any rhetoric that will turn people’s emotions against it, even if it means accusing our troops of terrorism. I’m in no way being dismissive of civilians casualties, but I do take objection to people who imply that we are deliberately targeting them as opposed to fighting Taliban combatants who wear civilian clothes and imbed themselves amongst civilians and have no qualms with using women and children as human shields.
I happen to think you are taking a far too technical, abstract approach to the actual realities of these happenings, which is an approach that clearly has the smell of inexperience and distance written all over it. A definition, a law, a standard does not make the de fato actions of any government pure and just, nor does such inure a government from edging into unjust and unspeakable practices. Just because the government says its just does not make its actions so. Further, the use of drones is extremely controversial and is by no means a settled matter on what constitutes acceptable warfare, not even by a long shot–and especially where civilians are concerned.
These devices are used in a way that destroys civilian populations on a large scale, and when doing so is not even close to necessary. The problem with Americans is they have no experience with living their daily lives with the reality of bombings, death and carnage by governments and terrorists as they bus or walk to work. As a result of this, people here tend to evaluate these matters in strictly abstract, academic and remote terms, terms that are completely devoid of the concrete actualities of these matters. These kinds of realities are known only by those who experience them.
The reality of this particular insularity and sheltering of Americans means that they cannot possibility fathom the possibility that their government may be violating articles of the Geneva convention in their zeal to root out terrorists, perhaps leading them to pursue rather unthinkable, inhumane policies and practices towards civilian populations in these far off, remote lands. I mean, how would you know? You would not.
Most of the opinions people in this county have of this kind of thing are steeped in lore, tradition, faith, patriotism, idealism and technical, school book definitions, with the benefit of being far, far away from it all. Many of the attitudes described on this blog are not born of the hardcore, war born realities most of the world deals with on a daily basis. I dare say that if the average American were privy to 50% of what its government does overseas, they’d be thrust into a convulsive culture shock the likes of which they would have never thought possible.
The bottom line is that one has to be open to the possibility that the view they’e subscribing to just might not be accurate and true.
Okay, so what is your definition of terrorism?
Terrorism is actually not defined in as strict terms as you seem to think. Twentieth century terrorism is probably closer to what you think of as terrorism, but in general, it is simply the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political, economic and strategic goals. Apart from that, however, I do not think asking me what my definition is serves much in the way of enlightenment.
the use of drones is nowhere near as cowardly as the use of children as human suicide bombs….
I was unaware that the conversation was centered on who is the most cowardly and despicable, as though somehow lessening the extent of cowardly behavior would somehow justify this sickness.
I cannot for the life of me understand what would motivate anyone to make such a statement. I’m starting to get the idea that mankind is overwhelmingly rotten to the very core.
Alwayslistening: how often have you encountered the harrowing nature of war?
Not nearly as often as someone who lives in the Middle East, for instance. Why do you ask?
So your reply should be “I have never seen the horror of war”. If you had ever experienced this terrible thing while at the same time realizing that the American soldiers to your right and left are the most compassionate warriors the world has ever seen, your viewpoint might be different. The moronic reporter that is questioning the U.S. “bombing” of civilians in Afghanistan (which was actually the Taliban using human shields) and equating it with the bombing in Boston should never be allowed into the White House again.
Well, I’m not sure how you could know who would say what under any set of circumstances, not the least of which someone you do not know. Secondly, there is a mistake in reasoning here that argues that the reporter’s comparison of the bombings in Boston to the needless policy of destroying scores and scores of innocent Afghani civilians means that one is casting the entire Afghan war as a US led terrorist insurgency. That is totally false reasoning.
Not only is no credible person is making that argument, but there is not one scrap of evidence that proves such. That simply was not the point of the question.
‘ If you had ever experienced this terrible thing while at the same time realizing that the American soldiers to your right and left are the most compassionate warriors the world has ever seen, ‘
You really are spoiling for a fight, aren’t you’ The Israelis constantly claim to be the most civilised, most compassionate killers of women and children, and the unarmed —- Oops!
That ought to read that the Israelis constantly claim to be the most civilised, most compassionate military/soldiers in history who kill only after going to extreme lengths and taking life risking heroics to prevent conflict.
A great example is when unarmed, they peaceably boarded the Marmara in the dead of night in international waters, resorting to gunfire only after withstanding withering gunfire from the armed and vicious passengers, seizing weapons from the said passengers and fighting all but insurmountable odds.
No passengers were deprived of their belongings, and the Israelis went to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the passengers photographic and recording equipment was protected.
The whole affair was observed by flying pigs.

I wonder if Amina Ismail was immediately tasered and drug from the briefing by Secret Service for daring to ask such a question! Obama does not take kindly to such questions, and wields a heavy hand controlling the press. After all, Obama is the “Messiah”, it is claimed by minions.
Probably, and the others present were too intimidated to report it. :-))

This is absolutely disgusting.. Will the American people EVER wake up?? Or Will they continue dancing to the rythm their fed on CNN, FOX, MSNBC & all other news? I see why people like Ron Paul get treated like dirt and often ignored.

— ‘War, historically has been used to describe one group confronting another group of more or less equally armed combatants.
The Israeli assaults upon Palestinians are both terrorism and war crimes.’ —
Cato III: read what I wrote, not what you think I wrote.
Quoting a military manual, —- which has no standing in law – ask the Germans hanged after WWII —
means nothing.
‘War, historically has been used to describe . . .’ Read up on history.
‘Terrorism is usually used to describe the efforts of a much weaker party . . .’
‘What the U.S. can be said to be definitely engaged in is counterinsurgency . . .’ Insurgents are usually fighting against invaders and occupiers after their military has been defeated.
Well some of it fits . . .
Of course we could simple say that the US is committing atrocities that constitute war crimes. That would cover it, nicely.
Alwayslistening… I agree with you, and the terms are interchanged by the powerful to as far as possible delegitimise those who oppose it. Also with your April 20 post.

They keep using 911 as an excuse for their rape and pillage of middle eastern countries. We all know that 911 was an orchestrated event for the very purpose of what they are doing in the middle east. No western reporter has the balls to question it, so therefore the white house criminality continues unempeded.

It might serve the ignorant well to know that Taliban fighters were using those children and women as human shields. The American Muslim, when contrasted with the 25 million radical Muslims in the world, is a very peaceful being. This does not eliminate the fact that there are 25 million Muslims in this world that are willing to strap a bomb to themselves to attain eternal glory.
25 Million radical Muslims???
Did you count them yourself? Did you hear this on Fox News? Or did the number just bubble up from your confused, indoctrinated brain?
You claiming to serve the ignorant is the best laugh I got in this discussion so far.
The “human shield” trope is about as tired as the “They hate us for our free-dumbs” trope.

I’m not going to enter the debate about the morality of all of this… I am just going to post about reality the military hardware. The term “precision bombing” is a misnomer based on the relative comparison of what we started out with vs what we have now. Yes our military can drop a bomb exactly where they want to. The problems are 1. really knowing where the target is and 2. the size of the bomb. Intel SNAFUs happen all the time so guess what happens when that intel is guiding a 2000lbs bomb. The explosion at the fertilizer plant in West Texas should give you decent context as to the size of the explosion that you are dealing with in dropping one of these bombs, but instead of the middle of nowhere Texas, your talking about urban centers of Iraq or Afghanistan. If you are within a city block of one of these being dropped, you are probably going to have a bad time. Where the relative part comes into play is that vs what I stated above, we used to have to level everything within a mile of a target, to hit the target during WW2.

It was a simple question, with a simple enough answer! A typical Govt sound bite, evading the question and talking about war objectives in Afghanistan. Why do U.S/U.K and its allies shield themselves, from blatant terrorism they carry out? Why are they above the law?

the united states has become a evil empire full of greed, and works for the banking elite, who controls the worlds economy, all wars are for the profit of a few,the rest of us are slaves being deceived to kill for their gain. 99 percent of the people in this world want peace, the 1 percent brainwash us to do their bidding,if we just refused to go and kill for them, and took their wealth they would be gone.peace can only be found when the people learn to do unto others as they would have done unto them.the love of money is the root of all evil, which is a illusion created by men who want to rule others.
